"Why do you like K-pop?"

Hi Everyone!

Something people may not know about me is that I love music. I'm not the most musical person - I used to play piano but I gave that up when I was younger for various reasons. But my brothers and family members have all played instruments, and so I've always been interested in music - whatever the type.

I think music is something that everyone should be exposed to in life, and it doesn't matter what genre you like best. I love alternative, rock, punk, pop, classical, indie, and K-pop.

I'm sure many of you are like "did she say K-pop?" or even "What the heck is K-pop?" For those of you who have never been exposed to K-pop, it's Korean pop music, though many people use K-pop when talking about Korean pop, indie, hip hop and rock music. But yes, you did hear correctly. I do like K-pop. In fact, it's one of my favorite genres of music nowadays (not many people understand why, but unless you listen, it's kinda hard to explain the appeal).

Just a few of my K-pop CDs
When I first heard K-pop, it was from my new roommate, and I thought it was kind of the stupidest thing I had ever heard. My other roommate had showed me Arashi (Japanese Pop) as well as Japanese Dramas. So while I wasn't unfamiliar with the genre,  I was like "I have no idea what this means" and "why are all these men wearing make-up and singing and dancing in groups". I quickly ignored what she had been showing me, but as the next few weeks went on, I found myself going back to the songs she had originally showed me - such as DBSK's Mirotic, SHINee's Sherlock & SHINee's Hello (which is now my favorite K-pop song...and group but that's beside the point), EXO's Growl, GD's Coup D'etat, Taeyang's Ringa Linga, Henry's Trap, B.A.P's Warrior, VIXX's Voodoo Doll (be warned - it's graphic). There was something about the music that I found hypnotic, if that's the right word, and quickly began replaying those songs over and over again. Eventually, I asked her what other groups/songs she could show me, and from then on, I've been hooked.

When I first started liking it, I didn't really tell anyone that I liked it because I knew that I would get flack for it, especially from people I knew. I heard things like "Why do you like it if you can't understand it?", so I pretended that I was just a casual fan of the music and that I didn't really care for it that much. For those of you who have done the same thing, or are doing the same thing now, I say stop.

If you can't understand something, it doesn't matter.

If other people think the music you like is stupid, ignore them. I repeat, IGNORE THEM.

Just like what you like. Life is too short to care about what other people think.

But back to K-pop. Just because I don't speak the language - though I'm learning - doesn't mean that I can't like the music or the artists. They are all incredibly talented - singing, dancing, acting, and performing all at once. Many of them are attempting to learn English and other languages so they can communicate with their fans. A lot of the artists compose, produce and write their own music - and even help write the music for other artists. Many of them gave up so much in order to train with these companies with only a sliver of hope that they would become artists.

If that's not motivational, I don't know what is.

So yes, I do like K-pop. I like so many genres of music that I can't understand why people have to ask me why I like K-pop if I can't understand the language. I don't listen to music for other people. I listen to music, regardless of the language, because something in the music speaks to me.

Isn't that why we listen to music in the first place? Because it speaks to some part of our soul and we connect with it? Because it transcends language and is a language of its own?

Some more K-pop CDs
So yes, once again, I like K-pop.

It's fun. It's catchy. The choreography is amazing. The vocals are great. The artists are incredible. And every once in a while, there is a song or artist that I feel like speaks to my soul. If I find a song like that, of course I'm going to listen.

Anyways, that was a tangent.  But it's something that's important to me, and I feel the need to explain how it happened and why it's important to me.

Go steal some sunshine today!

As for me, I'm going to go listen to K-pop.
Alyssa out.

P.S. All the videos linked are from the official YouTube channels. I wasn't paid to say this. I just really like them and wanted to share some of my "sunshine" with others.
